Brief

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) seeks to promote better mutual understanding and closer co-operation between the people of Asia and Europe through greater intellectual, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges. These exchanges include conferences, lecture tours, workshops, seminars and the use of web-based platforms. The major achievement of ASEF is the establishment of permanent bi-regional networks focussed on areas and issues that help to strengthen Asia-Europe relations.

Established in February 1997 by the partners of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)1, ASEF is the only permanent physical institution of the ASEM process, and works in partnership with other public institutions and civil society actors to ensure its work is broad-based and balanced among the partner countries. The Asia-Europe Foundation celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.



The Public Affairs Department of ASEF seeks to engage a motivated intern for a period of six months starting September 2008. The department promotes public awareness and understanding about ASEF and the ASEM process, and facilitates greater mutual understanding between Europe and Asia through the conduct of active public, media and institutional relations. Its function is to communicate timely and accurate information to a diverse range of constituencies in coordination with all of ASEF’s portfolios.



About the Position

The successful candidate will be assigned the following general duties and

responsibilities:

1. Projects, Special Events and Visits

a. Assist in the preparation of upcoming projects

b. Co-ordinate logistics with project partners

c. Provide administrative support for project’s participants and other invited

attendees

d. Prepare display materials for information booths and visits to ASEF

e. Respond to external queries



1 . ASEM (the Asia-Europe Meeting) is an informal process of dialogue and cooperation. It brings together Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mongol ia, Myanmar, The Netherlands, Pakistan, The Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, Vietnam, the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat.

Note: the Public Affairs department will be organising the following events in

 7th Asia-Europe Journalists’ Colloquium



2. Corporate Communications & Publications

a. Assist in the co-ordination of the production of the ASEF newsletter (every

trimester), and other printed materials as needed (e.g. Annual report, brochures etc)

b. Assist in the corporate video revamp exercise

c. Assist in the corporate guidelines update exercise



3. Press Relations

a. Compile news clippings on ASEF – hardcopy and website archives

b. Draft press releases as needed

c. Assist in the update and expansion of the existing media database



4. Others

a. Draft publicity or information materials on ASEF

b. Assist in preparing mail-out of publications

c. Various co-ordination and writing tasks as assigned by the Director



The successful candidate will have the following profile:

 Nationality of an ASEM partner country

 Excellent command of written and spoken English

 Knowledge of at least one other ASEM language is a plus,

 Good command of basic Microsoft Office applications,

 Graduate or Postgraduate studies preferably in journalism, public relations,

marketing, communications, international relations, or Asian/ European regional

studies,

 Relevant working experience is a plus,

 Demonstrated knowledge and interest in multilateralism, international organisations and current world affairs.

A nominal monthly financial remuneration of S$1,200 for Singapore-based intern or

S$1,800 (including housing allowance) for overseas interns is offered. In addition, ASEF also offers a modest medical insurance scheme to all interns.
